Why it works
Extended-metaphor essays are high-risk, high-reward. The reward is coherence — every disparate activity in the essay snaps onto one frame. The risk is the "fortune cookie" failure mode, where every paragraph reaches awkwardly to force the metaphor and the reader can feel the strain. Jade gets away with it because figure skating is a real, specific physical practice that she's done since childhood, not a metaphor she invented to make the essay sound clever. The metaphor came from her life; she didn't impose it on her life.
The structure is hybrid: the figure-skating anchor is narrative (a single, ongoing practice), but the body of the essay catalogs activities the way a montage does. The skating opening is strong enough to make us read the activity list as evidence of one trait — balance — instead of a résumé. Without that opening, the same activities would feel scattered.
What students should steal: if you have one specific physical practice (a sport, an instrument, a craft) you've done long enough that it shaped how you think, you may have your through-line. Test it by asking — does the metaphor describe how I actually approach things, or does it just sound nice? If the second, drop it.
